Galamsey destroys over 100 acres of farmland at Akyem Atobriso

Illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has reportedly destroyed more than 100 acres of farmland at Akyem Atobriso in the Kwaebibrem Municipality of the Eastern Region, threatening the livelihoods of farmers in the community.

The affected farms include cocoa, oil palm, cocoyam and cassava plantations, with residents warning that continued mining activities could cause further damage to the community’s agricultural lands.

The Amankrado of Akyem Atobriso, Nene Tenkyeme III, said illegal miners had invaded farmlands and caused significant losses to farmers who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.

He appealed to the authorities to take urgent action to halt the activities and prevent further destruction of the community’s farms.

Some residents also expressed concern over the impact of the illegal mining activities, particularly on farmers whose livelihoods depend largely on the affected lands.

They warned that they would resist attempts to introduce or expand galamsey operations in the community and called for measures to protect their farmlands and natural resources.

Meanwhile, the Kwaebibrem Municipal Chief Executive, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, said the Municipal Security Council has responded to the situation by ordering the confiscation of two excavators and other equipment allegedly being used for illegal mining.

He urged traditional authorities across the municipality to support efforts to clamp down on galamsey and help protect the area’s farmlands and water bodies.

The latest development adds to growing concerns over the impact of illegal mining on agriculture, particularly in communities where farming remains a major source of livelihood.
